Pesto Restaurants Joins ‘One Less Straw’ Pledge

One Less Straw pledge

Pesto Restaurants has stopped automatically putting plastic straws in drinks, to help put an end to the ‘wasteful’ practice.

The restaurant will only serve straws upon request in a bid to help reduce the number of plastic straws entering landfill or making their way into the world’s oceans each year.

The announcement comes as a wider campaign known as One Less Straw gathers pace. It aims to reduce the use of plastic straws which are thought to take up to 500 years to decompose.

Owner, Sara Gatt, said: ‘I’m passionate about the environment and I am hopeful, that by ceasing to automatically offer plastic straws, we can do our small part in helping to future-proof our oceans and environment. It’s a simple gesture that could make a huge difference, and I hope that fellow restaurants will follow in our footsteps.”

The Plastic Pollution Coalition which backs the campaign says more than 500 million single-use plastic straws are used each day in the US alone.

Autumn brings a menu makeover – available NOW!

We’re head-long into autumn now, and that means it’s time for a menu make-over! We can’t wait to share our fantastic new dishes with you. To whet your appetite here’s an idea of what could be hitting your plate!

Bruschetta Caprese

Fans of our meatball dish will be over the moon, as we’ve added Bruschetta alle Polpettine, is a smaller version of our classic dish on toasted ciabatta.
Or if you go mad for mozzarella, you’ll love our Bruschetta Caprese (pictured left) with buffalo mozzarella, roasted tomatoes, finished with a drizzle of balsamic vinegar and fresh basil.

Pizzette con gorgonzola e pere

We’ve updated our pizza dishes and proudly introduce our Pizzette con gorgonzola e pere, a gorgeous mozzarella and gorgonzola pizza with pear and rocket.

For those looking for something a little lighter, why not try our new Insalata Panzanella. This little beauty is our version of the 16th-century Tuscan salad, with tomatoes, ciabatta bread, red onion, basil leaves, green olives, roasted peppers and Gran Moravia shavings.

And it’s great news for our seafood fans, who will be in their element with two new dishes, Spiedini di gamberoni alla griglia, which is a skewer of king prawns, peppers and red onion, chargrilled and dressed with a mouthwatering lemon butter.

Spiedini di gamberoni alla griglia

Also the power of the people has won us over and we are very proud to be reintroducing (by seriously popular demand) a huge favourite. Farfalle al salmone affumicato e asparagi. This sumptuous favourite features farfalle pasta tossed with smoked salmon, asparagus, garlic, white wine and double cream. You’re welcome.

Oh My Cod!

Oh, my cod! Did you know that we buy our cod from Fraserburgh, Scotland, and truck it down to England overnight to make sure it’s as fresh as possible?

The restaurateur behind Pesto at the Davenport Arms, Macclesfield, really does go the extra mile to deliver something special for his customers.

For the last few years, Pesto has been buying its cod at the market in Fraserburgh, in north east Scotland, and trucking it down to England overnight.

Neil Gatt comes from a 400+ year line of Scottish fishermen who risk their lives each day doing one of the most dangerous jobs in the country.Neil Gatt with his Fraserburgh-caught cod

“My cousin, Paul, goes to the market for me and selects the best freshest cod he can find, then ships it overnight and it is in our business the next day,” said Gatt.

“We really are determined to serve our customers the best possible fish on their table. Most restaurants have no idea where their fish has come from, but I can tell you which boat caught it, where it was caught and what the skipper’s name is.”

“We have traced my family in the tiny fishing hamlet of Pennan, back to 1635 so far, but unfortunately the records before that were destroyed by fire. But we know that there were fishing communities there long before that.”

Peter Gatt on right. 1817-1900Pennan is nestled beneath sandstone cliffs in the North-East corner of Aberdeenshire and was once a village occupied by just three families, Gatt, West and Watt. Sadly, there are no Gatt’s living in the village anymore, with most of the fisherman’s cottages being used as holiday homes today. But the fishing still goes on, and Neil Gatt has three cousins who still go out in whatever weather nature throws at them to secure a living and to bring fresh fish to the market in Fraserburgh.

The Merluzzo Fritto dish on Pesto’s main menu features selected loin pieces from the Fraserburgh-landed cod deep-fried in Pesto’s own Birra Moretti batter and serve with a tangy mayonnaise.

We’re a Christmas card recycling donation station!

As the last of the mince pies are digested and the Christmas clean up commences, we’re helping local people put their old Christmas cards to good use with a recycling station at our restaurants throughout the month of January.

With the special donation stations, you can tidy up and do good in the process by turning your festive waste into woodland. We’re supporting the M&S Christmas card recycling scheme with the Woodland Trust and hoping to make it easier for our customers to donate with the local collection points.

We’re encouraging our customers  to take their cards to the restaurant or send them along with friends or relatives. This simple act will help create habitat for wildlife.

All donated cards will be taken by the restaurant to a local M&S where money generated through the recycling scheme will fund the planting of new trees throughout the UK. One tree will be planted for every 1,000 Christmas cards handed in, so every card counts. Since 2012 more than 32 million cards have been collected and 32,000 trees have been planted.

Drop your cards off at any Pesto by the 28th of January and help the Woodland Trust keep our countryside beautiful and wildlife-rich into the future.
